Studio Etiquette

Can I eat before yoga class?

It’s best to allow at least two hours after a full meal before practicing yoga. This allows time for digestion and minimizes discomfort when twisting, bending and doing inversions.

What should I wear or bring?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow freedom of movement. Tops should either tuck in or be tight enough not to fall into your face in an inverted (upside-down) pose. Feel free to bring water; it is also available for sale in the studio.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

No, the studio has everything you need. If you prefer to use your own mat, you are welcome to bring it.

How early should I come for class?

Try to be here at least ten minutes before the scheduled class start. This will allow you time to quiet your mind and prepare for class. Allow extra time if you plan to change into yoga clothes at the studio.

The first time you take a class, you will be required to fill out a new member waiver form. This will take about ten minutes, or you can print it here, fill it out and bring it with you.

What should I do when I arrive?

Please silence your cell phone or pager when you arrive at Akasha. We provide space for you to store your shoes and other items while you are in class. Gather the equipment you need for class and settle onto your mat in the yoga room. While you’re waiting for class to begin, you can stretch or simply relax, sitting quietly and breathing.

What if I have an injury or condition that may affect my ability to do the poses?

Let the instructor know of any such conditions (fatigue, pregnancy, injury). She will make suggestions for modifications or alternative poses to accommodate special needs.

I don't think my body can handle yoga. What should I do?

Yoga will help almost any body type and athletic level. As you practice, you will develop greater flexibility and strength. You will be amazed how much better you feel after the first class. If you have any concerns about physical or health limitations, please talk with us. Our teachers can show you how poses can be modified to accommodate many physical conditions.

Yoga Fundamentals

What is yoga?

Yoga is a system of psychological and physiological self-disciplines, which lead to a rebalancing of the body and mind. It is a mental posture, a state of equilibrium and stillness. In yoga, the method is the goal.

Why do yoga?

Yoga has innumerable physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Yoga:

  • Revitalizes low energy
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Improves posture and coordination
  • Strengthens and tones the muscles, decreasing back pain
  • Lengthens the muscles, increasing mobility in the joints
  • Improves circulation, especially in the hands and feet
  • Draws attention to the breath
  • Develops focus and concentration and prepares us for meditation
  • Teaches us to live in the present moment
  • Encourages self-trust by listening to our inner voice
  • Increases confidence as we move through the world
  • Increases our capacity to experience joy

Is yoga a religion?

Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy that began in India thousands of years ago. Yoga disciplines the body and quiets the mind, facilitating spiritual inquiry and growth. It complements, rather than competing with, your own religious beliefs.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha is a collection of physical exercises called postures or asanas. These postures are designed to strengthen and align your muscles, organs and spine. They also focus on your breath, which helps you to disengage from the stresses of the outside world. The increased strength, flexibility and concentration gained through asana practice provide the stamina required for meditation.

What does Akasha mean?

Akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning space, sky or ether. It refers to the all-encompassing and unifying spirit and energy of all living things. It is commonly used to indicate limitless possibilities, as in "the sky's the limit."

What does Om mean?

Om is a mantra, often chanted at the end of a yoga session. It is the sound of the eternal vibration of nature. When we chant Om, we connect ourselves with the rest of the universe.
